20131009 ROW80 check-in

By Kathrese McKee | ROW80

Nothing fancy this time. I’m a sponsor for these eighty days, so I’ll be poking around in your blogs, seeing what’s up with you. Looking forward to that. This isn’t my first time to do ROW80, but I’m planning to make it my most successful round by separating ROW80 check-ins from regular blog posts.

We writers get caught up in writing for other writers sometimes, and I think we do ourselves a disservice by not speaking to the greater audience that’s sitting right over there. (points) I will report my success or failure at regular blogging here, in my just-for-ROW80 status updates.

Sunday – Tuesday:

  • Wrote and published Whose Children Are They? – Parental Rights and Education about the Wunderlich family’s struggle to home school in Germany, and their government’s brutal enforcement of policies that date back to Hitler. Take a moment to look it over.
  • Wrote a guest post for ROW80 that you will see in a few weeks entitled “DONE is a Four-letter Word.” Revamped my bio.
  • Bought Scrivener for PC and started using it. My primary computer is down, and so I’m facing the prospect of trying to get it back to a usable state. Yuk. So far, I like Scrivener very much.
  • Started Book 2 outline in Scrivener. Learning curve time! Anyone else use Scrivener? (PC or Mac version)
  • Finished reading Kristen Lamb’s book, Rise of the Machines. I need to write a review on Goodreads. I think it’s a 4-star book because she tended to repeat herself. However, I do recommend it if you are trying to build your platform. I think she’s spot on about how authors should use social media and communicate brand. If you’ve read her previous books, her advice has changed over time, and this book contains up-to-date information. If you haven’t read her previous books, don’t bother. Just read this book.

Wednesday – Saturday GOALS:

  • Visiting several of your blogs and leaving comments. Do this for one another. Pay it forward by commenting on the blogs of other participant; you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how quickly you get to know one another.
  • Social media: Facebook (reconnect with people from my past and my present), Twitter (4X/day), Pinterest (pin photos for some future blog posts that are creative commons)
  • Write two more blog posts for this blog (non-ROW80)
  • Continue Book 2 outline & switch off with an idea I have for a short novel.
  • Computer recovery.
  • Write a plan for consolidating my old momsread.com blog into my author blog.
  • This post (Yay! I’m almost done.)

Next week:

  1. Write post for christsreflections blog for Monday, 10/14.

I’d love to hear your thoughts about:

  • Using Scrivener; love it or hate it and why?
  • What makes good content for author blogs?
