H. M. Gooden is the author of The Rise of Light Trilogy, and our feature today is about the first book in the series, Dream of Darkness.
Tired of moving yet again, Cat McLean finds herself in the town of Valleyview when her dad is transferred to a new job. Along with her older sister Vanessa, she must find a way to fit into another new school for what feels like the millionth time. And if that wasn’t enough to deal with, shortly after their move, Cat and Vanessa are involved in a near-fatal car accident. Waking to find that she has the ability to see auras and to heal others, Cat is horrified to also discover an ancient evil that means to destroy her new home. Cat must join forces with her sister and a new friend to defeat it, or die in the attempt. Will she learn how to harness her new powers before the darkness comes for them? Or will she succumb to the darkness she fears?
The original story came about due to a recurring dream I’ve had since my teens. When I heard about NaNoWriMo in 2015, I decided it was finally time to write it down!
I would say magic and friendship! Learning how to use your strengths and rely on people who care for you is part of growing up, and my stories draw heavily on this- with a side of magic, of course!
The first story doesn’t. I wanted it to be everywhere, middle America. But book 2 takes place in San Francisco and involves a bit of history, and book 3 is mostly set in Scotland.
Because I love to read it! I love coming of age and strength stories, and the fact that we all start out more or less clueless but become whatever we want, if we believe and work hard enough.
I loved my initial trilogy so much, I spread it out and gave each character their own book afterward!

H. M. Gooden has this to say about herself: I’ve always loved reading from an early age, and books about magic and friendship in particular appealed to me. With work and raising a family, one day I decided that it was time for me to add a little more magic to the world, and my first book was born.
