If you like a story that starts out fast and accelerates from there, then Launch by Jason C. Joyner is the book for you.
Sixteen-year-olds Demarcus Bartlett and Lily Beausoliel are among a select group of youth invited to an exclusive, all-expenses-paid conference at social media giant Alturas’ California headquarters. Led by charismatic founder Simon Mazor, the world’s youngest billionaire, this isn’t the typical honors society. It seems that everyone here has some secret, untapped potential, some power that may not be entirely of this world. An ancient prophecy suggests that if these teens combine their abilities, they could change the course of history. The only question is: Will it be for better or for worse?
In the Old Testament, Samson had great strength. Elijah outran a chariot. Nowadays we would call these superpowers. What if God had to give gifts to teens today for a rising evil?
You are given gifts, but how will you use them?
It’s set at a fictional tech company campus in Silicon Valley. I got to invent cool gadgets that don’t really exist because this tech company has a genius and charismatic founder. Oh, and they may be after world domination.
I read a lot of YA for book reviews and enjoyed the voice and immediacy of the genre. It fit how I like to write, with quips and fun mixed in with the drama.
Obviously the cultural moment for superhero movies is huge. However, I’ve always been interested in the idea of people with special abilities stepping into being heroic. We all have that capacity, perhaps not in such an earth-shattering manner as someone like the Hulk. But we all have the opportunity to be a hero to someone else by serving them in their needs.
